Navajo Rug from the Color Riot Exhibit at the Heard

I just wrapped up a two week trip to Phoenix, AZ to see family. While there we went to the Heard Museum-Advancing American Indian Art. I appreciated seeing a balanced variety of exhibits including work by contemporary doll makers, dozens of Navajo rugs that were woven at the turn of the last century (which were brilliantly colored), as well as an exhibit describing the complex history of the Indian Boarding School system. It is a major research institution with most of its collection available on-line (and now added to my growing database).

We also visited The Phoenix Museum of Art which maintains a significant costume collection; on display were women's clothes decorated and styled with floral themes. I was also able to experience a Yayoi Kusama installation, which is beautiful and delightful, and a little disorienting.

As I type, I find myself, unexpectedly, in Quebec City for a few days. I've been brushing up on my French on DuoLingo which is coming in quite handy! Hoping to have time to explore the Old City a bit and see the Musée National des Beaux-Arts which is currently exhibiting Thierry Mugler. Fingers crossed! I recently discovered a resource called The Fashion Map which is a database of every fashion and costume event happening all over the world; always wise to check there to see what's happening wherever... you might find yourself.
