In July 2021 I started a crochet blanket project. I saw different interpretations of Janie Crow’s Persian Tile crochet throw and wanted to make a new bedspread. Her pattern calls for 16 octagons. I needed to make 72 octagons, plus all the joining diamonds and the triangles on the border. I loved the variations that used a tight color palette but where each octagon was different. In order to have each octagon be a unique color combination, I used 14 different yarn colors (yarn brand paintbox acrylic). To have a guide, I created a spreadsheet to lock in the color combinations.
Then, I started crocheting! Things speeded up as I memorized the pattern and my hand became familiar with rhythm of hooking. I finished the octagons May 2023.
After that milestone, I spent another year finishing the connecting diamonds and border triangles. By mid-summer 2024 I was able to start connecting everything together and crochet a border. In order to control the stretch of the crochet and mitigate any itchiness of the yarn, I backed the whole thing with a dark brown cotton sheet. The center of each diamond and octagon has knotted yarn tied through the layers, and the edges are whip stitched together. Ready for winter!
